Information Technology Services (ITS), working with input from Iowa State's grassroots faculty and staff group, the Community of Educational Technology Support (ComETS) and in consultation with other Regents Institutions, has implemented a campus-wide lecture capture system. Although there have been some lecture capture solutions on campus for several years, the industry is changing and new products are becoming available at the same time our current license is expiring.

A comprehensive, software-based system will allow instructors to not only record their in-class lectures, but to also easily prepare material "off-line" for student review and discussion. By including video, screen captures, audio, and related files, instructors will be able to provide a rich media experience that will address students' needs for "anywhere/anytime" learning.

These are some of the things we will be looking for in evaluating and investigating potential systems:

  • Ability to schedule recordings in advance with a central system
  • Ability to create ad hoc recordings
  • Integration with CMS for publishing and viewer authentication
  • Ability to scale as needs escalate
  • Ability to publish captured material in several formats
  • Ability to monitor usage statistics

Lecture capture technology has great potential to enhance and transform learning. Students can preview material for later class discussion, go into more depth on a subject through additional instructor-guided material, and review class material to gain better understanding.

ITS is looking for a complete, flexible, and scalable system that will bring benefits to faculty and students throughout the University.
